Is Google's basic search becoming too smart for me? I know that Google has a lot of patents in artificial intelligence but are these being applied within the search service? I have searched the last few days on subjects and it seems that they try to 'localize' my results within the most information they can get about me. It seems that results in Arabic, from Arabic websites, and with other preferences come up as if I chose the settings to be as such. I can't find settings on how to reverse this.
I know it might be good for most searchers, but I think that most of us also know about the 'advanced search' settings. I think Google should consider starting to offer a more advanced, as in more controllable, search service as an option from the basic search; much more advanced than the current 'advanced' search.

Pan's Labyrinth

In my opinion, 2007 was a year full of Hollywood over-bloated movies with Spiderman 3, Pirates 3, and Transformers each making around a billion bucks.
Amidst these puffed products lies a great creation, called 'El Laberinto del Fauno.' Yes, a spanish movie, with the title poorly translated to a more Americanized 'Pan's Labyrinth.'
This one got three oscars for the 2006 year though! Best cinematography, best art direction, and best make-up is all that a NON-AMERICAN movie is allowed to take!
A contrast between a real-world-like picturesque of 1944 facist Spain, and a little girl's day-dreaming, the movie has 'What happens when make-believe believes it's real?' for its tag, and you can't describe it any better!
It's a rest-of-the-world, MUCH improved and more interesting, version of 'Cronicles of Narnia' series. And according to Wikipedia, Pan's director refused to direct the second Narnia movie to focus on his 'Pan's' creation, literally. He is a producer and the writer of the movie!
I warn you, this is a bloody one, with many vigorous bashes, MUCH blood and real-time head-shots! If you would like a screening, I will be happy to provide you with it! Yes, I'm giving the movie free publicity!

To expand on part I. First let's see those magical individuals whose efforts make up today's technology, skyscrapers, politics, economies, etc...

These individuals, overall, are not much better than us. Should they be special, then it's because they had better education. Other than that, they face social, econimic, and most of all, spiritual and ethical problems, probably more than us (at least, we can finalize our problems by going back to our Islamic sources).

What I mean is that we lack enough will to improve and cope with today's new world order. Many things rush to my mind now. Do I mean that we should be totally independent? no, well not in the near future if we want to set a new model (check out globalization: Italian designers manufacturing in SE asia). But it is will that rebuilt Japan after WWII. Will that made those countries today feared by the US.

The Delta-W Theorem of Efforts (Part I)

*** This is a realization that I shared with my friend Eyas Al-Faris. It was originally dubbed the 'Delta-T Theorem.' It is a theorem because of its consistency and for our inability to disprove it ***

Here goes. The theorem states that:

What we startle at, then feel bad for ourselves (for not having it), such as the many things we see well-worked-on in the developed countries, is only the result of vast amounts, yet extremely well managed, of small efforts by individuals. These efforts build up and make the end product.

Easily put through calculus terms, the end product is the result of infinitesimally small efforts by people, hence the usage of the physical quantity of work (W) in the name... Nuff said... Well, easier said than done, that is.

Can we rise to achieve above our expectations? Humanity, over its extended history, has proven this affirmable. In physics, work is the effort, which is very closely related to energy. In fact, energy is work over its time lapse. In our daily awareness, using one's energy results in work done. Physics is no Chinese. The question is, can we keep having a productive energy a goal we perceive at all times?

This is the beginning of a series. More to come ISA.

The difference between 42" and 50" displays may not seem much looking at these numbers, which may frighten people away given the big price jump, which is around the double. I saw lately a 50" display and felt it was significantly bigger.
I calculated the difference to find out that a 50" is 41.72% larger in screen size than a 42", although the diagonal measurements, 50" and 42", are only different by 19.05%. I used the fact that the screens have a 16:9 ratio, and the well-know phythagorian right triangle rule. I also converted from inch to cm to get a feeling of the numbers!
I guess the best size that 'fits' is determined by the size of the room where the screen will be used.

I sometimes choose to not look up the news. This is because nearly everytime I do listen to the news, I feel either sad, humiliated, or depressed.
The pictures that come onto our screens along with the words, often coming from Iraq, the occupied Palestine and the rest of the Muslim world show how ignorant some people are to allow these disasters to take place, stay there and worsen over the years. I feel guilt as if I am part of these people. So I choose the easy way out: dump the news for good!
This is wrong. One should pushed towards change upon hearing bad news. "And if you want to help your fellow man, you better start with what is in your hand," as Yusuf Islam chants.
May Allah bless us with constant change towards the better in all of our earthly times!

One day a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down.
It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed in the papers.
That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and listed what everyone else had said about that individual. On Monday she gave each student his or her list.
Before long, the entire class was smiling. "Really?" she heard whispered. "I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!" and, "I didn't know others liked me so much," were most of the comments.
No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. She never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose. The students were happy with themselves and one another. That group of students moved on.
Several years later, one of the students was killed in Vietnam and his teacher attended the funeral of that special student. She had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before.
The church was packed with his friends. One by one those who loved him took a last walk by the coffin. The teacher was the last one to bless the coffin. As she stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to her. "Were you Mark's math teacher?" he asked. She nodded: "yes." Then he said: "Mark talked about you a lot."
After the funeral, most of Mark's former classmates went together to a luncheon. Mark's mother and father were there, obviously waiting to speak with his teacher.
"We want to show you something," his father said, taking a wallet out of his pocket. "They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it." Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times.
The teacher knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which she had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him. "Thank you so much for doing that," Mark's mother said. "As you can see, Mark treasured it."
All of Mark's former class mates started to gather around. Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and said, "I still have my list It's in the top drawer of my desk at home." Chuck's wife said, "Chuck asked me to put his in our wedding album." "I have mine too," Marilyn said. "It's in my diary."
Then Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. "I carry this with me at all times, " Vicki said and without batting an eyelash, she continued: "I think we all saved our lists."
That's when the teacher finally sat down and cried. She cried for Mark and for all his friends who would never see him again.
The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day. And we don't know when that one day will be.

I wonder why this movie should be made with such recognizable (and thus believable) faces?
If you want to see a more realistic depiction of some of the *terrorism* that happens in the US, you might want to watch one of the two documentaries that I saw over the last two days:
1) Jesus Camp: which is about a summer camp for evangelical christian children that teaches them awful *extremism*. Remember that Steve Martin movie?
2) Terror Storm: Here it is! watch the beginning to know what it's about:

The front wing of a late McLaren F1 car. Yes, this front wing may be the result of the illegal posession of Ferrari designs; but I dunno if this is worth close to 100$million (which is the fine McLaren had to pay because they - illegally - had Ferrari plans).
Nevertheless, I've been to this year's Bahrain F1, and the aerodynamics of this years cars are outrageous! Go Massa!
